CANNOCK CIVIC OBSERVATORY
Staffordshire Observatories Group have now established a new observatory, the Cannock Civic Observatory, at Cardinal Griffin Catholic High School in Cannock, Staffordshire. A new plastic/fibreglass observatory dome has been erected on the site. The 'brown dome' from the former Pendrell Hall College observatory has been re-erected on the site.
The new observatory was opened by Brother Guy J. Consolmagno from the Vatican Observatory on Friday 17th September 2010.
The Cannock Civic Observatory was built as a memorial to Charles Adshead Loxton and his brother Samuel Ernest Loxton who were astronomers of local significance in the late 19th and early 20th century. The observatory is near to where Charles Loxton, a clerk for Cannock Council, operated an observatory in the early 20th century.
Details of any events at the observatory will be published on the events page.
